About us
Generali Group
For more than 175 years the Generali Group has been a leading global insurance and financial services provider characterised from the outset by a strong international outlook.
Assicurazioni Generali was established in 1831 in Trieste, and the first branch in Prague was opened on Wenceslas Square in 1832. At the end of the 19th century, through internal growth and acquisitions, Generali operated insurance companies in Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Albania, Bulgaria and Russia. The end of the war in 1945 brought about the loss of all company assets in Central and Eastern Europe, where governments had nationalized insurance activities. Generali initiated a joint venture in Hungary in 1989, thus becoming the first insurer from the West to re-start operations in Central and Eastern Europe.
Present in 64 countries, Generali has strengthened its position among the top insurance groups in Europe and in the world and has increased its importance in Western Europe, its main area of operations. In recent years, the Group has re-established a strong presence in Central and Eastern Europe and started expanding into the main markets of the Far East, particularly China and India. Generali’s goal is to secure its position as one of the most profitable providers of direct life and non-life insurance by focusing on continental Europe and international markets with strong growth potential and serving primarily individual customers and small and medium-sized enterprises.
The Generali Group is Europe’s third-largest insurer, as well as Italy’s market leader, with total premium income of more than € 70 billion. Total premium income in the CEE region amounted to €3.8 billion (including investment contracts) in 2009.
